review of Jeremy Millar’s talk by Benedict Drew

Cage, Margate, Cage
Last night I visited the Turner Contemporary project space in Margate. To hear a talk about John Cage by Jeremy Millar. This was part of the Turner Contemporary’s “Sound of Music” exhibition. The exhibition is really fantastic : link here :

The talk was excellent, informal and informative. The room was a blacked out space with a small video monitor, a projector and music playing, all simultaneously. Jeremy Millar started by saying that he had decided not to bring any notes with him and try and just remember what he was going to say, this action led to a much more open and accessible he also said that it was hard to talk about someone so hugely important not only to his art but to the way he thinks about every thing, this i think is so true. its hard to get your head around his influence. and what was good about this talk was that it didn’t try and cover it all. it was more like a chat.

Millar is currently some sort of research fellow at Ruskin school, researching Cage and is curating a large touring exhibition of Cages prints, drawings and paintings to be staged in 2010. it would seem his relationship with cage is long and profound. i want to know more.

my notes from the talk:

man asked for sound to be turned down.

lecture as chance operation.

is there a difference between cages visual art practice and his music ?

Schoenberg said to Cage that he was devoid of harmony.

eastern aesthetics and western art, its a one way street.

i made some other notes, but i can barely read them… ah well.

this was a great: event, small, intermit, honest, funny. more things should be like this. What i love about cage is that he is always there, and every now and then you are once again surprised and amazed and enthused by him. the closest thing to a saint we have.
