The Professional Practice Programme
The Ruskin has an additional, optional programme in the BFA course for second year students: the Professional Practice Programme. This initiative, now in its third year, provides each student with an opportunity to experience at first hand the professional practice of galleries, museums and arts organisations. It is hoped that by taking part in this programme, Ruskin students will have a chance to enhance their own studio practice and research whilst further developing their understanding of best practice in the arts.
Each organisation has been specifically approached in order that as wide a variety of experiences can be offered to the students as possible. We are also only creating partnerships with organisations that we hold in professional high regard and where there is a specific connection to our students’ work and research.
For 2011/12, we have 24 students in the second year and we have been able to invite them to consider placements in the following areas: exhibition planning and design; museum education; arts publishing; gallery management; festival production; film making; archives and licensing; working with art as therapy; press and communications; marketing; graphics; art workshops and design projects in schools and hospitals.
Each student undertakes their placement during their Easter or summer breaks, so allowing them to spend upwards of 2 weeks with the host organisation. Our Partners in this initiative are found in Oxford and further afield in the UK, as well as internationally.
